View of areas/territories created via overlapping runs/walks

Maybe I’m missing something, but is there really NO leeway here (similar to how ‘hitting nodes’ works)??? Do the GPS tracks have to actually touch or overlap to count as a single territory?

I often start/end runs on opposite sides of the street, so the paths never cross unless there’s GPS drift. Because of that I’m left with dozens of smaller areas instead of one larger territory.

It’s gonna be cool to see those Territories join up, as you cross old paths. I just have two large Territories, and I’m super psyched about joining those - it’d be awesome to have more to work on.
I’d be really interested in seeing your various Territories, if you’d be willing to share a screenshot (private message if you’d rather it wasn’t private).

I’m a bit torn on the gaps and islands “fix”. There have been numerous cases where I have forgotten to restart after a pause only to remember after going for a while. What I really want to do is be able to align the track with the actual path taken.

Then there are the “pause, reposition and then restart”. These cases would be best made into separate groupings.

I’ve got 8 pages of Territories… The largest is 33 miles, but nearly all the others are under 3 miles.

Here’s one example that would ideally be consolidated via a 25 m leeway for nearby streets. But, maybe my route planning just isn’t suited for this feature.

Suggestion: include a count of activities captured within each territory? I think it would be fun to see a tally of the thousands in my main one :slight_smile:

Just curious, is is the idea to get as much runs connected? Or it just is what it is in the result now?

When I saw how many separate territories I have around Stockholm I realized I can make a few calculated runs to try and connect most if them. Except there are a few islands that will still be isolated.

As I have 156 territories spread out in 48 countries it’s a bit difficult to find all the ones that might be canidates for joining. I have to page through the long list and click Show one at a time. I would like to have a button “Show All”

Or better yet, perhaps a “show all territories on screen”, like a node hunter for territories?

Yeah, the next release will include this. It’s going to initially display 0 for everyone, because that info hasn’t been calculated yet. After the release, I’ll send in jobs to update everyone’s counts.

This is so interesting to me. I’ve never seen this ‘plan of attack’ before.
It looks like you’re isolating each tracked activity to exactly what’s required to complete new streets. Rather than, for example, tracking your run/walk to the new neighborhood as well as your new-street effort.
I typically see tons of activities with ~common starting points … a bunch that leave from someone’s house is most common. I’ve got a pile that leave from my old house, another pile from my gym, another pile from my current house, and as I expand out to more cities I expect I’ll have other piles that start from various points on our local bike path.

As someone that’s within 20% of completing a city of nearly 6000 streets, I initially was someone that always traveled from home, but as I’ve been working from that point outwards, I’ve only got the outskirts of my city left which would mean each activity would need to be 10+ miles long of me getting there and back before I begin actually ticking off new streets. So I’ve now taken to driving to an area with no purple lines, parking up and clearing a set of new streets in the area, and so subsequently I have start and end points all over the city area. I imagine this is fairly common for people that are trying to 100% a city, albeit perhaps some people are less lazy and take a train/bus or cycle to their given area.

Typically I do make an effort to connect things up though as I’m not one that likes to leave gaps on my LifeMap and as my city is fairly uniform shape I only have a few unconnected territories where I’ve ran an area on the edge of the City and haven’t yet got to filling in said gap.

Yeah, I’m in the same boat - although, in the 7-9 mile area. So far, I’ve just been sucking it up and getting 1-4 streets per run. :sweat_smile: I do have a plan to cycle out to a particular starting point for an upcoming run - only a 6 mile run to finish one street lol but it’s also going to join up my two largest Territories.

When I originally thought of this every-single-street thing, the idea of a single static start point wasn’t part of the goal. I just hadn’t considered it - probably mostly because the cities around me are small enough to allow it.

I just plodded around neighboring cities through the city border display, seeing how close I get to 6k streets & I’d definitely take some kind of “outpost” approach in completing that much area. Pick various spots where I can do ~10km from, effectively breaking up the whole space into ~5k chunks.
It’s interesting how, since the total distance of my city isn’t huge, I find myself pushing my limits - I don’t really want to run 8 miles, but I push myself to get it done this way. If my city was the size of the neighboring cities combined, I don’t know that I’d end up pushing myself in the same way.

Yup, same strategy since I’ve covered everything reasonably close to home. I’m also lazy (er, strategic) and avoid backtracking or redoing a street whenever possible.

I’m glad to have the new Territory feature. Adds gaming value to the offroad trails completed in the past and future. Also now I can feel better about some of the long, straight runs that in the past have netted 0 completed streets. At least now they’ll increase territory. Fun incentives.

Thanks for those that suggested and worked on implementing the new experience.

(Little hurt that I have so many significant distances broken up by activity lines that don’t touch but do come within 10ft of touching. I’ll get over it though)

Is the Territories feature available for anyone? Or only for supporters? If it’s the first I wonder why my page returns me zero info.

Hey, James. I just skimmed the whole thread. This idea is awesome. Would it be too hard to just have the territories that overlap just connect and form one territory? For example, I have multiple instances in St. Augustine, NYC, and Atlanta metro where I have overlapping territories and I just find it a bit annoying that they don’t automatically connect. I’ve read the solution on here: just run a route to connect them, but was wondering if auto-connection is an option​:slightly_smiling_face:

Doesn’t that miss the point of continuity? I get the argument for a small tolerance for activities that miss being connected by a matter of a few metres (eg activities that “meet” on opposite sides of a road) but even that I’ve gotten used to and started to ensure a new activity actually crosses over an existing one. But joining territories that merely overlap due to the convex nature of the territories constructed around them would fundamentally change what this feature provides.

Would it also not become iterative? ie if you create a single territory with two groups of activity whose individual territories overlap, you will create a larger convex territory that might then overlap with additional territories that didn’t originally overlap. You then create an even larger (unconnected) territory when you merge those into this one enlarged territory.
