New user with a few questions about route builder

Hello,
I just started using Citystrides (and Strava for that matter), and my goal is to walk all the roads of my city (Liège, BE) before 2027.

I created my first route with the builder, and I exported the .gpx to use it in Strava.
Is it the easiest way to follow a route I just built ?

Then I opened Strava and loaded my new route and started recording but I was surprised Strava wasn’t sending audio cues when I needed to turn to another street. Is it normal ?

Is there a way to follow a custom route without looking at my phone every 30s ? I’d like to receive audio cues in my airpods so I can focus on walking and looking around. I also have a apple watch but I have no idea how to sync it with my iphone after starting a route on my iphone.

Welcome to CityStrides!

I’ve not personally used Strava with GPX files but I can’t imagine its something they do particularly well. For following a route on the Apple Watch I’ve personally had success with the WorkOutDoors app which is basically a more advanced version of the Fitness app that Apple make. You load in the GPX files via the phone app, and then can enable everything from turn by turn notifications to audio cues in the settings, they’re super comprehensive. Albeit it definitely uses more battery than the default iOS tracking app.

I think you can also use the Komoot to achieve the same thing, but I think they’ve only just released their Apple Watch app so I’m not sure how many features it has so far.

For audiocues during running I use the rungo app. Works perfectly

Thanks Tom for your detailed reply !

I’ll give WorkOutDoors a try. Can you tell me if the app on apple watch shows you direction with arrows ? I just tried a walk with a strava route on my watch and although the whole route was visible in orange on my map, the direction (step by step or with arrows) wasn’t showing on the screen, which was a problem since I was walking in the city center with streets in a square overlapping each other.

Thanks Patrick, I’ll look into it if WorkOutDoors doesn’t work for me

Yeah it shows you with an arrow in the corner of the map display when the turn is coming up, and then it flashes up fullscreen when its time to turn (thresholds for this are adjustable in the app settings). It will also tell you if you’ve gone off route.

This page has a good breakdown of the route navigation features, but essentially when you load in the GPX file from CityStrides into the app it’ll prompt to add the waypoints which you need to make sure you select as CS doesn’t generate these, but I found them to be pretty accurate when I did try it out.

Thanks Tom that seems promising, I’ll probably buy the app this evening. After I’m done with my run / walk on WorkOutDoors, what’s the easiest way for it to sync with CityStrides ?

WorkOutDoors supports Strava, so your best bet would just be to login to your account via their app and then import the workout to Strava and let CS handle it from there.
