New roads added to OSM prematurely

Morning Striders,

Just got back to CS this morning after a prolonged break away dealing with other life stuff! Obviously during my several months away my city progress has dropped as new roads are built and tweaked. Pleasingly, this has given me a good few local routes to map out to pick up these new nodes.

I had a lovely couple of hours wandering my local town in the brisk British sunshine this morning and have vowed to get back on the CS wagon especially as I’m due to retire at Christmas and am hoping to have more time to devote to such malarky!

There have been a few additions that are private driveways to residential properties and some roadways within private businesses which I think will need altering. The one issue I’ve found for the first time is a few new roads that don’t actually exist right now on a new housing development. At present the site is fenced off and secure as they’re still building the houses; the roads are just the base material and are no way a completed public road. I guess someone has the information to be able to edit them into OSM including the layout and name, but aren’t they are bit premature in doing so? I can happily wait a few months until they’re finished and wander down there again but doesn’t this screw up routing software and sat navs?

Anyway, the few streets I’ve had issue with that I could do with a second opinion on are:

The last two nodes are behind a locked security gate to the manufacturing company.

I can get the two end nodes but Colleton Park complex is behind a security gate

And the three streets above (plus Horton Grove which is not on OSM) are all, at present, a building site.

So, nothing earth-shattering, but a little bit of me wants things to be right and I’ve edited minor stuff before and got my wrists slapped by some over zealous OSM nerd so I’m looking for a bit more friendly advice and guidance from the lovely CS crew!

Cheers.

I believe gated private streets should definitely be marked as private. Split the street at the gate, add a gate point, and mark the back section as private and the open bit as public. If people disagree with you on OSM, I’d say post the photos and GPX plots and make your argument there in the forums.

As for under construction, I often add new streets well before the neighborhoods are finished. You can tell that developers are doing the same. I don’t think there’s any harm (especially if you have GPS plots, and aren’t relying on outdated satellite images) because cities are constantly in flux. We have dozens upon dozens of huge areas here that we actively avoid, because they are building basically entire mini-cities. Like you say it’s annoying to get to an area and a whole section is blocked off from construction.

If the street is not completed and accessible it should be set as highway=construction in OSM, and won’t be added to CS

Thanks gentlefolk for the replies - I’ll have to get my hands dirty with OSM again and tweak a few things; if the whole British Isles disappears off OSM…
