Map disappearing

I just updated to 17.2 and my map is back! Yippee! Fingers crossed it stays there :crossed_fingers:

Sadly the problem has come back. I’ll try the other fix in the morning

I just released a minor update to my JavaScript build step, so if you try again in the morning you should refresh the page or close/re-open tabs.
I don’t think it’ll help, but it’s something I can try … I’m kind of flailing with this issue.

I get the same freeze when zooming a lot on bith LifeMap and different city maps. And still the same today

I look at my map all the time as I am visual and I love to see how roads and trails connect or are close together.
This is a huge loss to me not to see my map anymore. To me it will be like another STRAVA acct which I can see what I do faily. But the perspective of seeing all the streets I am walking and trails. I will be sad not to see that anymore.
So disappointed tonight not to see my most recent walks in Southern OR.

You and I have an open support about this. It sounded like the phrasing in my message wasn’t clear, making it sound like you needed a Mapbox subscription. I let you know that the message you saw was attempting to convey that your browser isn’t compatible with the map software.

I also mentioned some actions that you can take to get things in a state where the map can be drawn:

If you visit https://get.webgl.org/webgl2/ do you see the spinning cube? If not, does following their instructions help? (Sometimes the link they share is unhelpful, so don’t feel bad about needing to follow up with me)

If you can’t figure it out yourself, let me know what device you have & what browser you have & what version your OS and browser are.

Let me know, either here or in our open support conversation, how this helps / the extra details I’ve asked for.

Hmm, ok… I’m going to need to do a lot of info-gathering. Can you share this info?

  • Device
  • OS and version
  • Browser and version
  • Is there any browser console output that corresponds with the map disappearing?
  • This is probably the most difficult … I need further information to clarify ā€œzooming a lotā€ … are you maxing the zoom in/out as fast as you possibly can? I need a better sense of exactly what you’re doing … I basically need to work towards a reproducible set of steps that cause the map to disappear, which is going to be tough

Regained then lost access on my iPad again today but very grateful to still see the map on my iPhone and on my Windows PC this morning before I left so I’ve got the essential access for now for which I’m very grateful.

I followed the link you posted and this is the sequence of screens I get to the point of selecting downloads when I’m thinking those are more for a developer unless I can get further advice on what to select.

Thanks so much for all you’re trying to do to fix this. Definitely not what you need at this busy time of year.

I think you submitted your comment before your images fully uploaded.

Not sure if this helps at all but I went to look at today’s walk in Wandrer.earth and there’s no map showing there either so I’m guessing Craig also uses mapbox and is having a similar problem

Apologies. I’m on hotel wifi and it’s not letting me load the images. I’ll try again later

I just reverted Mapbox to v2.15 (the one prior to their v3 release) … wondering if this resolves everything … can you try refreshing an open CityStrides page, or closing its tab & opening the page in a new one?

If you’re online now (11:36am Eastern) I’m in Message #8862 by JamesChevalier – #Water Station if you want to chat while testing things out

Ipad mini (5th gen)
IOS 17.2 (was 17.1.2, just updated, but no change in error)
Safari - 17.2 and Chrome 120.0.6099.101
Don’t know if you can get browser console output on the ipad…

So what I do: Open one of my cities (or LifeMap).Normally I click the icon for full screen. Zoom level normally starts att 1 km or so (in the bottom left corner scale). Using two finger to pinch out and zoom closer into the map 4-5 times to get 100 m scale. Then pinch in 4-5 times the zoom out to 1 km or 2. Repeat this over and over. Sometimes 2 or 3 times is enough, sometimes 20 times needed, but eventually it freezes, map don’t change, but the scale m/km still changes. Leave this map, and go to a new map (or the same again) and then no maps are visible.
Earlier I said Chrome is working - but I was wrong, I just hadn’t done the above steps long enough. Now it also freezes the same way. But here I actually got an error (same as Catriona?)

Currently seems to be ok on my iPad. I’ll try again in the morning

That’s good to hear.

If you have a moment when you try again in the morning, can you check to see if their demo page behaves well or not?

Good morning. Just checked their demo page and saw the spinning cube you mentioned. Now says that my browser supports the current version. I can’t thank you enough for all the effort and skill you’ve put in to resolve this for us. It is much appreciated

Today I have not been able to reproduce the error when zooming in and out on CS, both Safari and Chrome. I can see the spinning cube. But when I go to Mapbox map at Mapbox Streets | Mapbox
And zoom in and out there, it freezes after a while, in both browsers. And when that happens CS also freezes.
But as CS seems ok now, and if it freezes again it’s easy to fix, I don’t think you need to put more effort on this issue.

That’s bizarre

Is the fix to reload the page? My head’s in a few different places, and I don’t recall the specific fix - especially after downgrading Mapbox.

I do, though, because I can’t stay on this old version of Mapbox for very long.
I’m hoping that others experience similar issues & something gets reported to them. In the meantime, I’m going to have to build a reproduction (which is going to be super difficult since I can’t reproduce the issue) that I can share with them. :confounded:

I don’t want to drag you along in my debugging process - I’m going to see if I can find a setup in AWS Device Farm that will let me reliably recreate this issue - but I’m wondering if you can do one last test to help me start my process…

Can you let me know if this basic map page I set up causes the freezing issue for you?

First time I tried this test map it froze almost immediately, on first zoom in. Next time I had to try for a while, maybe ten sets of (zom in x 5, zoom out x 5).
The fix is to go to Ipad Settings - Safari - Advanced - Website Data. The bizarre thing is that I can pick any site, now I chose ttw.static.com, and delete it. Then everything works fine again
