How do I fix accidentally creating two accounts at the same tracking service?

This post covers the issue where you have a CityStrides account through a service, but then you accidentally create an entirely new account with the same service & connect that bad account to CityStrides.

This applies to any tracking service, so instead of naming one specifically e.g. Runkeeper I’ll refer to the service as “Tracker”.

The “written out version” of what we’ll be doing is:
We’ll log out of CityStrides completely, then figure out which Tracker you’re currently logged in as. If it’s the ‘bad’ one, then we’re going to revoke CityStrides access (which will delete that account in CityStrides), and then close out that Tracker account completely. Then we’ll get you logged into Tracker with the ‘good’ account, and finally get you signed back into CityStrides. You may need to log out of Tracker on other devices, if you’re signed into the ‘bad’ account on any other device.

Here’s the step-by-step on how to do this:

  • Visit https://citystrides.com/
  • Choose ‘Sign Out’ from the top right menu
  • Determine whether you’re signed into the good or bad Tracker account
  • The next few steps are totally different based on which Tracker account you’re currently logged into, so I’ll split those up below:

If you are logged into Tracker with the BAD account

  • Revoke access to CityStrides from the Tracker’s settings
  • If you have any activity data that you want to keep, export that (if they offer this option)
  • Optionally, delete that account entirely from the Tracker’s settings (if they offer this option)
  • Continue on in the final section below

If you are logged into Tracker with the GOOD account

  • DO NOT revoke access because that will DELETE your good CityStrides account
  • log out of Tracker
  • log into Tracker with the BAD account
  • Revoke access to CityStrides from the Tracker’s settings
    • be SURE that you are signed into Strava with the BAD account, as this will be DELETING the bad account from CityStrides
  • If you have any activity data that you want to keep, export that (if they offer this option)
  • Optionally, delete that account entirely from the Tracker’s settings (if they offer this option & again, BAD account only)

Continue from either scenario here

  • Log out of Tracker
  • Log back into Tracker with the GOOD account
  • Visit https://citystrides.com/users/sign_in
  • Log back into CityStrides via Tracker
  • Repeat this process if you’re logged into the Tracker as the BAD account on any other device
  • If you exported any data from the bad account, import that (if they offer this option)
  • Go for a run because yeesh that was a lot
