Dubai streets - neighborhood-centric streets possible?

Howdy!

I’ve been running in Dubai during short visits for 20 years or so, but finally moved here earlier this year. Great place to run (tho summer’s challenging).

While yasmine salaam yssalaam has pretty much put everyone else to shame here, I will say that completing streets is especially challenging when every neighborhood uses numbered streets - so for example there is a 8th street that is almost 18km long but spread over 15 non-contiguous locations.

Maybe I’m just a weenie, but can the streets be neighborhood-limited somehow so they can be completed by neighborhood without having to go to fifteen different neighborhoods?

I can’t imagine this is unique to Dubai. Are there similar cities and was this addressed?

Best,

Doug

My data source, OpenStreetMap, has no concept of “street” - it stores data as a collection of Ways. I create the concept of street in CityStrides by joining streets in the same city that share the same name. This doesn’t always go well, as you’ve seen.

Sometimes, for very large cities, I can create smaller cities as “nested cities” which don’t count towards anything in CityStrides but provide a smaller place to keep track of as you tackle the actual full city. This is also limited by what’s present in OSM - sometimes I can, sometimes I can’t. There’s some coverage in smaller areas within Dubai, but nothing close to full. :slightly_frowning_face:

Ach, figures. Well thanks for the explanation!

No worries. Happy to hold 22nd place in Dubai - hard-won kilometers over the summer!
