City borders inconsistent?

:link: My profile link : Kristin N - CityStrides

Hello! I mapped out a route today that should have covered streets in Citrus Heights, CA and also Fair Oaks, CA. However, the only streets recognized after syncing are the ones in Citrus Heights. When I view the map of Fair Oaks in City Strides, the streets show outside the border (example: Pin Oak Ct) Google maps show that street is within Fair Oaks. Is this something fixable, or is there just some sort of no man’s land for that area?

Yes, the area you mean is not in CS, as you see in this pic the part between Citrus Heights and Carmichael is not defined as a city in CS. If it’s defined in OSM it can be imported, but it seems a lot of places in the US are not defined well in OSM. I’m not so familiar with US but I see a lot of references to incorporated, unincorporated, CDP etc

Thanks for the explanation! What a bummer!

As an FYI, there is this: Missing/Broken Cities Tracker

I thought there was a post explaining how to use it, but I can’t seem to find it.

You know what sucks? The County of Sacramento’s map of communities (link to PDF) says the area in question is part of Carmichael, an unincorporated area & census-designated place, but the Carmichael boundary in OpenStreetMap doesn’t match the boundaries in the county map.

Related to this topic: how often are city boundaries updated?

I have input cities into the broken/missing tracker before, but this seems to be a different issue entirely that the borders just don’t line up. :woman_shrugging:

Yes! I figured I was either in Fair Oaks or Carmichael. . . Turns out I was nowhere!

Yeah, what an interesting/odd gap there… Unfortunately, fairly common…

If I zoom in on Pin Oak Court in OpenStreetMap, right click, and choose “Query features” … The Enclosing features section doesn’t include a usable city.
