What do you wish you knew about CityStrides sooner?

Apologies, I should clarify my question. I already have Garmin and Strava linked, so if I had chosen to sync CityStrides from Strava instead of Garmin, would it be limited to the past 5 yrs and no manual additions indirectly through Strava syncs? Perhaps it would have been more flexible to initially connect using Strava.

You can connect with multiple services and do history syncs, unless I’m mistaken. Maybe supporter-only features, I’m not sure!

By connecting Strava, it automatically starts a full history sync for your account. Since Strava does not have a 5 year limitation, all of the data in that service will automatically sync into CityStrides.
If you have data in Strava that’s not present in CityStrides, you can share your profile link & I can do a full sync for you. Supporters have access to a “Sync Now” feature, which is primarily useful for Runkeeper since they do not notify of new activities.

For anyone reading along unaware of the feature - You can visit the Activity Trackers section of your Settings page to add/remove services & pause/unpause them.

A post was split to a new topic: Safe to delete tracking account?

First of all, thanks for a fun website!

One aspect of onboarding that confused me was the second email which said “Start from your Profile (you can get there from the top right menu). From there, go into your Cities tab (that’s the one with the globe icon) and find the one you’re working on now.”

I didn’t see any cities in my list and I think it’s because I hadn’t completed a full street yet. But I had logged kilometres there so I expected to see it.

Something I wish I knew sooner was that my old activities would be imported (it was probably mentioned and I missed it). Maybe that should be an option we can turn off… I can imagine people wanting to start a city from scratch. For me, the problem was that I had a lot of bike rides logged as runs and ended up having to delete or update those in Garmin Connect and then delete them from CityStrides, which was a pain.

And finally, something I still want to know: can I see people who have most recently contributed mileage to a city? It would be fun to see if other people are also doing this actively in my area, and seeing their progress. All I can find is a list of people ranked by how many streets they’ve done, and they may have last made progress years ago.

I built Challenges for that exact reason - choose your city, a start date, maybe an end date, and only activities in that timeframe will apply. I haven’t built out the Supporter Feature page for it yet, so that’s another thing to add to the list.

Not exactly but you can see the list of other people running/walking in your city in the tab with the people icon. That’s sorted by percent complete, so day-by-day you might see that list change as some people make more progress than others.

The Friends feature I’ve set up provides a list of recent activities/completed streets. That could be an interesting view to bring into the city page.

re: Going on private property without prior permission

Maybe in the UK, where the “right to roam” exists, but you would be suicidal to do that in Texas, where people have the legal right to shoot you.

Hi Santiago, the “Right to Roam” exists and is enjoyed in Scotland. But, over 150 constituencies in England have no real right to roam at all. Most others have only tiny percentages. Unfortunately, we’re restricted to Public Footpaths on much of the countryside which we are meant to stay on - fortunately we’re not likely to be shot if we stray offline!

Being able to click on the magnifying glass to see which nodes in an area I need to hit as this makes it so much easier to quickly find where I need to go next when I am out and about in a new area. It’s such a useful feature that I would have enjoyed earlier haha. Nowadays I really miss it whenever my couple of months of citystrides support runs out.
