Strava functional changes

I have a Strava question that isn’t related to CS, but I figured there are a lot of other Strava users on here that might be able to provide some insights.

Just over a month ago, having not been able to go walking for a while (too much rain in Sydney), I noticed irritating changes to Strava functionality. Specifically, the map that I see while I am walking (and tracking where I am and have been) is now cluttered with blue heat maps, plus the map rotates as I change direction, rather than remaining fixed.

At the same time, Strava told me they were giving me a free one month preview to the paid up version. I linked the two, presuming the different view was part of what they considered to be enhanced functionality (but to me is extremely irritating). After searching for a way to politely decline the remaining month of free “upgrade” I figured I’d just need to see it out.

But now my month is up and the view hasn’t changed. I still see annoying heat map lines, and the orientation of the screen still changes as I change direction. So it seems that these are universal changes that flow through to the free version as well as the subscription version.

Is there any way of switching these off? I long for a clean, static map that just shows me where I am and where I’ve just been.

For the blue lines, on an Android phone: while on the page to start recording an activity, click the icon with the 2 black diamonds. That brings up several map view options including 3 versions of Heat Map choices. Unclick whichever of those three are highlighted.

For fixed direction behavior… AI says the following. I can’t verify right now since I’m sitting indoors, but seems likely it’d work:

“To prevent the Strava map from rotating, tap the GPS icon on the screen while recording an activity to switch to a North-up orientation. You may need to move a bit for the GPS to calibrate and hold the position. To avoid the map reverting to a rotating view, you might need to disable the Autopause feature in your settings, as this can cause the map to reset when you stop. “

Many thanks for your assistance Jesse.

Yesterday I did my first Strava-recorded walk since you posted your suggestions. The heat maps are gone (was going to say permanently, though I now know how to get them back if I ever want to: I won’t!).
The screen orientation is a bit more irritating in that I have to tap the GPS icon each time I start a walk, or even after I resume after a pause. But at least I know how to do it now.

Thanks again.
