Nodes on footpaths?

Not sure if this is an idea, a topic that has already been covered (could not find it), or just impossible…

It seems that footpaths don’t have nodes on them. If they could, this would be very cool. If i walk off road i never complete the path (obviously, no nodes). Not a biggy for me in the scale of things, but would be neat if it were a simple addition. I am pretty sure it’s not simple…

Aside from the OSM issue of what type street it is, the main problem is that CS only maps named streets. Sometimes I come across a perfectly “normal” road (typically a country lane) that literally has no accepted name. So no nodes. Other times I have seen mappers add things like FP 12 as their “Prow Ref” (in the UK) which is really wrong as the name of a road is not any sort of “code” but I have run a few such “named” paths when they have mapped as say land access tracks or unpaved service roads.

Interesting, so it’s the naming in OSM that is the issue rather than the ease of grabbing the co-ordinates? Shame. I can see some paths that are named in OSM but don’t have nodes. Is there a way you know of to get them included? I am unfamiliar with how the nodes are created.

There have been many philosophical discussions about what gets included or excluded, you can read a bit of it here: Pedestrian area - #56 by JamesChevalier

I thought there was a discussion about footpaths in the About section of the site, or maybe it was a forum post. There is nothing stopping you from running footpaths or trails to fill in the lifemap more, but I don’t think it makes sense to “officially” add them when the site’s motto is “run every street”.

If it has a name, it will then depend what type of “way” it is in OSM. As others have pointed out it is run every street here in CS not literally everything. Wandrer does that.

Thanks Tim, yes that’s a fair point. I do indeed follow all sorts of paths and none. And I like to see them in the map. No need to complicate things unnecessarily.
