I see after what seems like forever Denis Bafounta no longer has ran the most amount of streets on CityStrides.
Bit of a shame we don’t know who the Strider is as would be nice to see their LifeMap. Indeed ditto for somebody who is about to overtake me. Still good to have the privacy option even if personally Striding seems about the most “public” running thing one can do…
I seem to have spent quite a lot of runs in recent months regaining 100% in quite a few cities. A mapper near to me has been very pedantic and every little bit of public footpath and/or bridleway that could “possibly” be considered a street due to having a well made surface has been added with the “code” name of that footpath or bridleway. Not really following OSM guidelines I feel but seems a good excuse though to return to some “rural” areas and oddly get a few “streets” on a seemingly otherwise off road route.
I should very soon complete my biggest city “abroad” (in Portugal not UK where an for). Only 2 streets to go and largely random ones I just missed at the time but fortunately not far apart. The Uber drivers of Faro have been very “helpful” getting me back to restart and pick me up from wherever I end up! When I started Faro I thought I had to run about 5 miles there to get started, do a few and run back. Not that keen
Cheers to Denis for his amazing streak. As I have climbed the street counts I would often look to Denis’ dogged consistency over the years. He has been an inspiration and his fine example helps get me out the door!
As for the new top 'a private Strider? As far as I’m concerned, a public list such as Leaderboard shouldn’t even list people who don’t care to share their details. Why are you even there? Sorry if that seems petty but Denis is still the leader in my book!
Agreed, I think private striders are incredibly irritating. I get not wanting your exact addressed displayed for all to see, but take them off the leaderboards entirely, if they don’t wanna play with the rest of us anyway!
I repeat what I’ve said before, maybe some runners don’t even realize they are private? When they look at leaderboards, what does it look like? Do they see a normal list with themselves in the top? Is there something that makes them aware that we don’t see them?
TBH I am not sure how I make myself “private” even if I wanted to. Also as a bit of a running YouTuber as well as an avid Strider I feel I “need” to make my Strava open so both CS and everybody else can have a look if they want to. Besides I so rarely run “from my door” anyway!
I’ll just throw my opinion on here that although I don’t feel super strongly about it, I do think that a public leaderboard should only rank public profiles.
Think it does also present a PR headache. In previous articles about CS, Denis was highlighted for running the most streets. What will future such articles say? I think Strava have it right - you can’t be on public leaderboards for private activities. Besides if the leaderboard is meant to be a “competition” doesn’t it give an advantage to some over others? If it is not a competition why have it ?
I see Denis is back on top! Maybe some new motivation for him. What with a cold and relative lack of daylight at the moment have certainly been “slow” on Striding myself last few weeks and have dropped a few places myself. The streets will still be there of course…
