It’s a pity that Northern Ireland is so poorly mapped
Moved this into its own thread, since it’s a new conversation…
Perhaps Northern Ireland can benefit from a similar treatment that Scotland got.
These are the places at admin level 6 (click “Run” in top left): overpass turbo … but of course Belfast has to straddle two counties, making things impossible for me
I’m also seeing some places in there now that don’t seem like they should be in Northern Ireland like Glaslough, Northern Ireland - CityStrides
I see decent coverage at admin level 9 as well as admin level 10 … but they include a lot of places tagged “historic” … boundary=civil_parish also has good coverage
I think it’s going to take some local people to view those results, click on some places (especially places over larger cities), and determine which level is “best”.
Hello, I am new to city strides, I can see all of my run data and location routes however it says I have completed 0 streets even though the map shows otherwise.
When I try to search up my city Belfast, Northern Ireland it does not come up on the list of cities, is there any way of fixing this?
Many Thanks
Adam
Hmm, yeah, there’s not much of anything present in Northern Ireland.
It looks like admin level 6 has full coverage
but the area around Belfast is a mess of overlapping counties that I wouldn’t be able to do anything about (resulting in duplicate streets for people running there)
admin level 10 also seems to have full coverage
but that results in some pretty weird looking places
for example, Relation: Town Parks (4510490) | OpenStreetMap
Thank you James for looking into this, I appreciate it. Is there anything I could do to help this situation and make Belfast be listed as a city for me?
Many Thanks - Adam
it gets “better” … all of the admin level 6 places are historic - they were all disbanded in 1973 in favor of districts: Local government in Northern Ireland - Wikipedia
Of course, only two of these are present in OSM https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/4183318 and https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/15812155
I seem to have these choices…
- Import the historic admin level 6, and nest Belfast into one of the two counties it’s in (probably County Antrim since that’s the most overlap)
- Import the admin level 10 places which would split Belfast up into these places (click Run in top left)
- Import places tagged as civil_parish which would split Belfast up into Shankill & Knockbreda
- Import only the historic Belfast and leave the rest of Northern Ireland unmapped
Which option leaves you least mad?
Thanks James, I think option 2 would be the best option.
Hi James, I’m just checking where you able to get this updated?
Not yet.
I’d love some other people to chime in on their view - ideally people local / local-enough to Belfast. It can be difficult to undo these kinds of decisions, so hearing from the community that I’m about to make a good decision … or the least worst decision … helps me feel good that I won’t be screwing over Future Self:trade_mark:
Someone just emailed me about this, and I shared the whole situation with them. After reviewing the options & seeing @ablee suggest option 2, I went with that.
There is one lingering decision/option…
I could import Way: Belfast (1376570967) | OpenStreetMap and then run a query that deletes any cities in CityStrides that overlap with its border. It wouldn’t be perfect, because both sets of borders don’t perfectly line up. This means there would end up being some gaps where streets wouldn’t exist in CityStrides.
Level 10 borders:
Belfast border:
I think that sounds like the best idea
Thanks James
