Toggle-on/off-able arrows would work just as well for me as a gradient! I also load onto my Garmin watch (for now), but have had almost given up on it due to the max-50 course point limit.
Arrorws would be really helpful. If I save a few rotutes at a time it is really hard to remember what way I am going. Even worse it its one or 50 points and garmin only shows lines. Would be nice to pull up on my web browser.
Since we’re giving feedback, I also wish the color of the route line was different from the color of the lifemap. When I toggle on my lifemap to make sure I haven’t run somewhere it is really difficult to tell if I traced my route over somewhere I already ran because they are the exact same shade of purple. Yes the line thickness is different but it would be cool if it was some sort of lighter/semi-transparent color that could show the Lifemap lines it overlapped.
Well the trace on both activity and route is now blue and my comment is past its expiration date love it!
I have not worked too hard to find a TbT app for my Garmin 235. I know they exist, it’s just that a printed paper map is more to my liking. However, I do like the ideas of arrows, and in fact, an app that was just a big arrow might be very useful.
James, Would it be possible to have direction of travel arrows periodically on routes. Sometimes when you are trying to complete a grid of streets etc. and the route crosses over itself, it can get a bit confusing. Arrows would help.
Yours
Peter
I’ve tried a few different versions of displaying directionality in both routes and activities. I’ve merged your post into this thread which has screenshots of those attempts.
The current setup of distance markers helps but is definitely lacking for more complex routes.
I’ll take another look at the idea of arrows to see if I can put something together that doesn’t look like a messy pile of garbage.
- Rockets
- Arrows
I have no control over the color of either rockets or arrows
Thank you. That’s very helpful. Peter
I agree that this is definitely the usecase where having clarity would help. Something that visually shows what turn-by- turn navigation instructions would be ideal, no idea how to do it though… Maybe have coloured arrows in the route when it makes a turn so as to show the different paths when a route crosses itself?
I usually try to keep my routes as simple as possible, leaving international gaps in the route in an attempt to keep things somewhat traceable
While building a Route with rockets:

Thanks for sharing that screen shot - I had built this out for Activities and for Routes, but I had forgotten Route Builder
Voting is up here: Directionality in activity lines - #28 by JamesChevalier
it’s 50/50 so far, so please share your opinion if you’re reading along & haven’t voted yet
I have to say, not the biggest fan of the rockets (currently) showing up in activities, really clutters things up. I think that rockets/arrows are most useful in routes and route builder, where you are running or will run. I don’t see much utility for me personally in something I already did, I know which direction I ran…
Fair point!
Others reading along - if you feel the same way or are neutral, please tap the heart icon on Kevin’s post … that’ll help me gauge other people’s opinions on the addition.
If it’s a strong ‘nope’ then I’ll drop the rockets as soon as possible. If it’s not, then I’m going to wait a bit and then remove them. That will give people time to get used to them, and if they’re upset when they suddenly disappear I’ll hear about it.
Overall, I get it - we have start and end markers and we have distance markers along the route. We don’t really need to review our past activities with the same level of scrutiny that we need to review our upcoming Routes.
(And Supporters have the ability to ‘rerun’ the route with the play button on the map)
Directional markers would be really helpful for the saved routes (run planning and execution). Not sure how much it helps to see afterwards like you mentioned. Thanks for everything you do!
The rockets are so fun! Definitely agree that theyre most useful in route planning and building, and less so on an already-completed route.
Along the same lines as this, could we have an option in settings to turn them off entirely? I personally think they’re unnecessary clutter even in route builder, but others will obviously find them more useful.
Also, in situations where the route doubles over they become rather pointless. Screenshot is part of an out-and-back run with various little rockets on collision courses.
I love the rockets!! I have been on a short break and just used it today. Though my route was simple it will come in handy when doing a bunch of streets.
The directional arrows have been a huge help. Thanks for those! Is it possible to make a color gradient to the route line color? Start to finish the line could go from a light color to dark or vice versa. It may help figure out which direction to turn next when there are sections in your route that cross over each other.
If you go up and down the same street the route line could be split in half hot dog direction to show the line color change.
One of the biggest challenges is figuring out where you’re going next and this may help visualize that.
Thanks for your time and consideration!
