CityStrides Slang?

What words or phrases do you use to describe your CityStrides activities? To me, “Nuking the nodes” mean covering a bunch of nodes. “CityStriding” is doing what we do. “Nemesis” is how I refer to whoever I am trying to beat. I am trying to come up with a term that means “accidentally redoing a street that one already completed.” I suspect there’s a set of lingo that CityStriders use. Let’s hear about it! Would be fun to collect the words or terms here.

Hmm interesting post. When I first met the guy who was at the time ahead of me in Lisboa, I jokingly called him the “King of Lisboa” and he got a little embarrassed. Never considered him a nemesis, even though I wanted to finish first!

Don’t have anything for the nodes, I just call a run focused on finishing streets rather than training or speedwork a CityStrides run or CityStriding like you said. And when I accidentally redo a street, in my inner monologue I just say I doubled-back over it.

I’ll add that when I’m following a route and I make a wrong turn, or zone out and miss a turn, I often will “punish” myself by continuing on that path and making a new detour that often adds extra length and new streets to the run, and eventually double-back to the original route if possible. I hate turning around in the middle of a road!

When I turn around at a normal intersection like in the screenshot below, I call it “cul-de-sac-ing” a street. I’m treating the intersection like a dead end or cul-de-sac when it really continues on. I always wonder what people think when I make these sorts of random turns.

I was a bit worried this Sunday when running in Oslo, by the Akershus fortress. Armed guards outside, and I was running back and forth outside to catch all nodes, while holding my phone up to check the map. Suddenly occurred to me that maybe photographing was prohibited in that place…

I just had a scenario that needs a witty phrase to describe it. Hopefully it won’t happen too often:

I started walking along a carefully-planned route to hit a few short streets. I was going to hit two long streets too then thought maybe I won’t need to, it was getting late, maybe the short streets will do. As I took out my phone to see what time it was, I realized I never started recording. Other than the unfunny, unwitty “dumb mistake”, what’s a good phrase for the forgetfulness?

Some terms I’ve picked up from other striders or fellow runners.

“Tresmap/tresmapping”. Portmanteau of trespass and map. To run a private road, either to pick up nodes or just for completionism. May or may not involve hopping a fence.

“Hanger/Hanging Chad/Island”. Missing a segment of a road (or roads) by accident. Generally describes an area or road that is far away from any other nodes. May require a dedicated run just to finish it off.

“Mapping” is the general term that I use among my running pals to describe the Pacman-like activity of citystrides. I’ve heard this referred to as “striding” by others.

Trespassing? I would never do that, LOL!!!

Every day when I return from walking my wife asks ‘how many dots did you eat’…so there is an undercurrent of me being PacMan with her and my friends. She has no idea its actually all about the streets :joy:

I have a back-and-forth text with #1 in my city (I’m #2). He give each other heads-up warning and collaborate on how to update the OSM. Our main slang is related to the stray dog problem in our city, which we refer to as “free range pups.”

Is there a name for the activity of scrolling around a map to plan the next walk or run to hit more nodes?

Doomstrolling?
