A thread for Sydneysiders (specific road/suburb ponderances)

Calling other Sydneysiders (as no-one else will be interested)

As a result of all the Sydney suburb “cities” seemingly being updated overnight, I have lost Liberty Grove as a completed city. When I went to see what had changed, I found that Oulton Avenue now has a large number of red nodes.

For the rest of you who think you’ve completed Liberty Grove, the new nodes have appeared on what I believe to be a vehicle only on/off ramp to Homebush Bay Drive (HBD). HBD is definitely entirely pedestrian prohibited (until it changes its name to Concord Road, at which point it can be walked, even though it’s still classified as a yellow road on OSM (and hence CS)). From memory, there are clear signs at the foot of that ramp prohibiting pedestrians but I really don’t want to go back to Rhodes and Liberty Grove to check.

What are other people’s recollections? Is anyone here going to own up to changing the access for that onramp to pedestrian = yes on OSM? (That change has been made - I’ve just checked). Or can anyone think of a reason why someone might have wanted to change it. If you look at the map, it leads absolutely nowhere other than onto HBD so it is inconceivable that a pedestrian would ever want to walk there, even if there weren’t signs forbidding it and a lack of pavement.

Further to the above, I just found a way to navigate to the ‘history’ section of OSM, which shows me the note added when the change was made. It seems that this section of road was previously unclassified and someone has decided that, on the basis of it having a name, it isn’t a “slip road” but rather a proper road. They have therefore changed its classification to a tertiary road. I suspect the default settings for a tertiary road are that it is accessible by all.

But I’ve also used Google Maps to take a visual look at the street. While the birds eye view doesn’t enable me to locate a “no pedestrian access” sign, it’s pretty clear from that view that there is no pavement, which is consistent with my recollection that there is no pedestrian access. There is an adjacent park, but I believe that is accessible only from the Rhodes section of Oulton Avenue (which is pedestrian accessible).

If others agree with my assessment, I’m happy to change the access in OSM to pedestrian = no. I have no interest in arguing within OSM about whether this is a tertiary road rather than a slip road. I just want my 100% back for Liberty Grove!

Another effective tagging I’ve seen is highway=trunk
