Request for Node Removal - Hannibal, MO, USA

Hi Stephan, welcome to the CityStrides forum. Are you also new to CityStrides?

CityStrides’s data comes from OpenStreetMap. Here are three links from the Wiki section of this forum that explain the data used to mark progress in CityStrides, learn about OpenStreetMap, and basic tips to get started on making edits on OpenStreetMap if you choose to do so. Editing OSM is a lot of fun and could be an addicting hobby; it’s my video game.

One of the core principles of editing OpenStreetMap is map what’s on the ground, that is, OpenStreetMap should reflect real-life conditions and data should be verifiable. Because of that, OpenStreetMap should not be edited to make it easier for people to mark streets as complete on CityStrides or improve progress on similar websites. For example, even if a street feels unsafe for cyclists or pedestrians, that street’s access data should remain as is unless there are signs or laws explicitly banning pedestrians, cyclists, etc., from accessing a street.

I felt like I needed to write all that to explain my reasoning for action on the edits you suggested:

  • The nodes of the six roads you list (Palmyra Rd., River Bluff Dr., James Rd., Fair Oaks Dr., Clinic Rd., & Huckleberry Heights Dr.) intersecting U.S. 61 must remain. Since they intersect U.S. 61, those nodes are necessary to keep to maintain the road network. If pedestrians are explicitly banned from crossing U.S. 61, then the access tags for those intersections should reflect that; I know that access rules for U.S. Highways differ based on jurisdiction.
  • I made the edits you requested for Washita Avenue, Suellen Drive/Place, Meadowbrook Road, & Carroll Street after consulting the city’s official map (PDF).
  • I did not make any changes to South Arch Street or Vermont Street because I couldn’t determine the extent of the roads based on aerial imagery.
  • I did not make the change you requested for South Maple Avenue. The Hannibal city map I linked to above has the street extending south of Colfax Avenue. I suspect South Maple Avenue is correct and you’ll have to do some bushwhacking to get that pesky final node. We all have stories about the lengths we’ve gone to to complete a street on CityStrides, believe me.

Feel free to ask any questions you have. I hope this was helpful.
