Overpass Street Query

Good perspectives, thanks @hhummel. European urban runners must have ankles of steel :stuck_out_tongue:
I’ll add that indoor=yes tag to my local hospital and await the next CS OSM update.

I do not like the idea of ignoring cobblestones either. After all, one does not need to literally run every street… Walking, or hiking, is acceptable too.

Good find - the next release will include an update to that query which includes all the other indoor tags (updated CityStrides Street Query - Google Sheets as well)

3 posts were merged into an existing topic: Removing service roads from those included in citystriders

Would this be fair to assume that you mean to remove slipways from showing up in CS lists? If so yes, I agree, I’ve found several areas in NH/Maine that have boat launches showing up as necessary to run.

If it was me, I’d keep it… I was expecting it to extend into the water, but it doesn’t.

Oh wait, that second one does look like it has a node in the water! :grimacing:

Someone has recently added Christie Lane in St Leonards NSW: Christie Lane - CityStrides. This is a former street which no longer exists and it has been added with a tag of ā€œrazedā€, where ā€œrazedā€ means completely obliterated. I think the overpass query should be updated to exclude streets so tagged.
Interestingly, I have visited both nodes, but still have not been given credit for completing the street, not sure if this is part of this issue or something different.

Trying to take good care of my local city ā€œKĆøbenhavns Kommuneā€, I’ve been running the query in the Google Sheet and it returns 2665 named streets, however the refresh done at the same time in CityStrides shows 2666 streets.`

I’ve tested the query with the Overpass ā€œdate:ā€ and ā€œdiff:ā€ predicates to make sure that it’s not just because i have a time glitch.

Is the query in the Google sheet up to date and aligned with the CityStrides source or might there be a discraprency?

Hey, can we also add "highway"!~"via_ferrata"?
It’s a relatively new tag in OSM - link that has been getting more usage lately (at least in my area) and last month some finally popped up in my city - example.
And yeah, although it is an interesting addition to the challenge, I don’t really think ferratas belong in CS.

Staring at the nodes that CS is using, I’m wondering about dropping way nodes that don’t contribute to defining the way. I see nodes for crosswalks, traffic_calming, bus stops, and that kind of thing. Since nodes can have multiple purposes, I don’t actually think this is possible. There is a non-zero chance that a speed bump or similar feature could be an inflection point or terminus in a way. Dropping a node tagged as something like traffic_calming=bump that is also crucial to the way’s geometry would be bad.

To be clear I’m thinking about the impacts of dropping nodes with logic in the overpass query after ā€˜node(w)(area.a);’ For instance, adding [!ā€˜traffic_calming’]; would nuke all of the nodes tagged as traffic calming.

Even if the node’s only tag was traffic_calming= there’s still the fact that it’s a part of the set of way nodes, which means excluding it has some danger. So, I think I’ve talked myself out of pursuing this :). But if anyone has any ideas how to form a query that would exclude a node without affecting the shape or size of the way that would be interesting.

I am surprised this topic has not come up before anywhere that I can find in the forums:

Should ways labeled as Service=Alley be included in Citystrides? Are they streets or aren’t they?

From a ā€œgut reactionā€ standpoint, I don’t usually look at an alley and think ā€œI need to run that to run every street in this cityā€ but I may be in the minority.

I try to run all alleys, named or not and whether they’re currently in CityStrides or not in case in the future someone else changes their status in OSM to make them start showing up.

Im walking my city but try to walk every alley way, foot path, canal towpaths and even cemetrys. I want to see my map coloured in

I agree with Jesse and Mark, I have no wish to ā€minimizeā€ my runs, so I often run some extra unnamed ways, just to fill the LifeMap, and maybe some mapper will put in a name soon

Where I live, alleys aren’t named. That’s probably why I never thought to exclude them.

I think there have been discussions about alleys in the past, but I can’t find them. I think some cities (LA maybe?) have alleys that are officially streets whereas around me they are not. Ah, the alleys around me don’t seem to be mapped in OSM.

I’m still battling the highway=trunk changes, so I’m not interested in adding alleys to the conversation right now :grimacing: … it definitely seems like a ā€œcan’t make everyone happyā€ issue & I’d want to see a bunch of examples on both sides of the remove it / keep it argument.

I reckon ā€˜alley’ is a word that has a different meaning in different parts of the world. I’ve come across a couple of thoroughfares in Sydney that I might think of as alleys, though they almost never bear that name. On the other hand, parts of Sydney, especially the older (boroughs) that are close to the CBD (and, indeed, the CBD itself) have oodles of laneways. These are almost always navigable by car, though they rarely have any house fronts on them. In some parts of Sydney (especially the inner west, where I live), they run between nearly every street and provide garage access to residents. Most are named, some aren’t. If you took them out of CS, you’d probably cut the road count of the Inner West (borough) by a third!

Is this the kind of road that’s being referred to as an alley?

Liz - yes, that’s what I’d call an alley and matches what we have around here.

Japan has a LOT of named alleys in the built up cities, which I think of as skinny streets, and so run them all on my travels.
