It started well then the diagonal lines through residential areas just feels fake

You can see [his Strava account](https://www.strava.com/athletes/50414200#interval?interval=202418&interval_type=week&chart_type=miles&year_offset=0), and he also explains (e.g. in [this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/Strava/comments/1gxs6rl/a_guy_from_toronto_spent_a_year_running_to_draw_a/)) how he did the diagonals. The TL;DR is strategic pausing.
