Military Security and Mapping GPS data

Sorry, this isn’t really a technical issue, but definitely relevant. Just caught an interesting article this morning that could apply to the future of GPS mapping, including Strava’s Heat Maps and Citystrides:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/a-map-showing-the-users-of-fitness-devices-lets-the-world-see-where-us-soldiers-are-and-what-they-are-doing/2018/01/28/86915662-0441-11e8-aa61-f3391373867e_story.html

Basically, heat maps seem to revealing too much information about military bases to the world. Seems like the military and soldiers should bear a lot of the responsibility of loading GPS data to public apps, but since that’s unlikely given the sheer number of users, this story could add some stress to our favorite mapping sites too as they are potentially pressured to deal with this issue?
